Professor Ulrich Schwaneberg observed that not all possible variants of a protein can be produced with existing procedures. He found an explanation for this problem and developed it in an idea of how to enrich the diversity in a gene library. Professor Schwaneberg gave as a practical task to his PhD student, Tuck Seng Wong, to prove that his idea is possible in the laboratory. This is how in 2004 they could present the first "proof of concept" of SeSaM (Sequence Saturation Mutagenesis).
Furthermore, Professor Schwaneberg wanted to develop the technology so he hired Dr. Alexander Schenk as a scientist. The aim was to make SeSaM technology generally applicable to all proteins. Dr. Schenk worked having this purpose between October 2005 and September 2008. During this time he also built the company around SeSaM technology with the help of Professor Schwaneberg and Jacobs University Bremen. SeSaM-Biotech GmbH was launched in October 2008 as a spin-off from Jacobs University Bremen to bring sustainable solutions through directed evolution.
Since then, the management of SeSaM-Biotech made the company grow as an important player in the field of directed evolution. The first step was to get business partners. Next, in order to keep our innovative edge or further validate our technology, besides our business partners, we also have academic partners. Moreover, SeSaM-Biotech is member of several excellence clusters or industrial networks. You can read all about our management, markets we operate on, academic partners, business partners and industrial networks on this section of our webpage.
