Applications of directed evolution in red biotechnology

During the chemical synthesis of new chemical entities it is often difficult to control factors such as enantioselectivity, chemoselectivity and regioselectivity. Biocatalysts offer a simple and effective solution to selectivity related problems.

Modern medicine started to search in nature protein-based solutions, in order to develop new biological entities. Unfortunately, nature did not optimize these proteins to be perfect drugs. This is the task of protein engineering.
