SeSaM-Biotech wins Bremen Founders Award

The SeSaM-Biotech GmbH is one of the three winners of the Bremer Founders Award 2010. The start-up founded in 2008, was awarded third place in honor of successful business and outstanding dedication.

Dr. Alexander Schenk received the prize of 2000€ last night at the 9^th Bremen entrepreneur gala in the financial center of the Sparkasse Bremen. First place went to prizeotel Bremen GmbH, while second place went to the Winkler Studios GmbH. "My team and I are very pleased to receive this award and are proud that the jury has rated our business concept as one of the best in this year's field of applicants," commented company's founder, Dr. Alexander Schenk. 

The criteria considered for the competion included unique selling point, degree of innovation and coherence of the business concept, the existing business development, future prospects of the company and the economic importance for the region of Bremen.

SeSaM-Biotech was founded in October 2008, around a patented process developed at the University Jacobs. The platform technology of the company, SeSaM (Sequence Saturation Mutagenesis) is suited for biotechnological enzyme optimization.

Enzymes are natures way to undergo chemical reactions with optimal specificity and efficiency. Nowadays, industry is building on natures success and utilizes enzymes in applications such as the production of drugs, detergents or other biotechnologically synthesized substances. However, in this situations, enzymes need to be efficient at extreme conditions i.e. high temperatures, pressures, salt concentrations etc. With the help of the SeSaM method, enzymes can be tailored for industrial production processes. Compared with other methods available on the market, SeSaM technology SeSaM stands out through its simple implementation, speed and cost efficiency.

The Bremer Foundation Award The Bremer Foundation Award is awarded once a year, for start-ups from Bremen. The coveted award is presented to entrepreneurs who have built up a very successful young company. The aim is to contribute to the positive development of start-up climate in Bremen and to recognize outstanding businesses while helping entrepreneurial role models to move into the public consciousness.
